𝗡𝗼𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗮𝗹𝘁𝘇𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮.

“Ohana”, the Hawaiian word for family, has become part of our everyday vocabulary across languages and cultures ever since Lilo & Stitch hit theaters in 2002. The animated series followed in 2003, and now, in 2025, with the live-action remake trending again, the word is back in the spotlight.

To me, it’s more than just a word. It’s a gentle reminder of the sacred bond we share with those who truly stand beside us. Sometimes, they’re our blood relatives, those who not only share our name but also our struggles, our joys, and our silent understandings. Sometimes, they’re friends who become soul-kin, or pets who love us unconditionally. 'Ohana' isn’t bound by blood, but by presence, by loyalty, and by love.

In México, we have a word in Náhuatl: “Nocencaltzin”, which means “Mi venerable y digna familia”, or in English, “My venerable and worthy family”.

It’s one of many beautiful words from our native languages that warm my heart and fill me with pride in my heritage, my culture, my people and my country. Words like this carry the warmth of generations. They speak of honor, belonging, and the quiet strength of shared roots.💖
